Holds & Demurrage
How are holds & demurrage reported?
OpenTrack is directly integrated with many North American terminals, enabling a higher degree of visibility into berthing, discharge, availability, outgate, rail loading, and empty return events. OpenTrack also tracks critical data such as demurrage, holds, and yard location—saving valuable time and money for your operations team.
Each terminal has its own method for reporting holds, and it can be challenging to track the names, reasons, and implications used by each facility. That’s why we have conducted extensive research and compiled a standardized set of hold types and codes. We receive reports from terminals and map them to a consistent format that’s easy to interpret.
However, not every terminal reports holds and demurrage information. Below is a list of terminals that OpenTrack supports, along with the corresponding data fields that are reported.
Please note that OpenTrack reports demurrage at terminals in two ways:
- Demurrage Owed: This is the amount of demurrage currently owed on the container, as reported by the terminal.
- Demurrage Incurred: This is the total demurrage that has been accrued for the container over time.
Example:
- 8/1: Demurrage is $200 because the trucker didn’t pick up the container.
- 8/2: Demurrage is $0 because it was paid, but the trucker failed to pick up the container again, so the demurrage resets to $200.
In this case, OpenTrack will report the demurrage incurred as $400, but the demurrage owed as $200, since that is the current amount due.
